    Tonight’s episode of NFL MONDAY QB on CBS Sports Network (6:30 PM, ET) featured a recap of the AFC and NFC Championships, including discussion of the play of quarterbacks Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan, as well as brothers Jim and John Harbaugh meeting in the Super Bowl. Host Adam Schein was joined on the show by NFL ON CBS quarterbacks Phil Simms, Rich Gannon, Steve Beuerlein and Dan Marino.     Following are excerpts from the show.
    (ON RAVENS QUARTERBACK JOE FLACCO):
Beuerelin: One of the most important things with him, which people knock him for, is his lack of emotion, his lack of energy out there on the football field.  I admire the consistency.  No matter what the situation is, he shows up. He is cool. He believes in himself.  The guy does not get rattled no matter what the situation his.  

Simms:
If he wins the Super Bowl you know what his nickname is going to be? Joe Cool. 

(ON FALCONS QUATERBACK MATT RYAN):
Simms: I'll blame him if I think it's his fault.  I’m not afraid to say that about the quarterbacks. It’s tough competition. These guys can't be perfect...  If you are going to be a daring player like he is, you are going to throw some interceptions and have some mistakes. 

(ON THE HARBAUGH BROTHERS):
Simms: I think they are the exact same guy, it's just that John hides it a little more.  You shut that door, they are both tough as they can be, ruthless. John doesn't show it to the public like Jim does.

    INSIDE COLLEGE BASKETBALL (6:30 and 11:00 PM, ET) brackets tonight’s live game action. Host Lachina Robinson is joined by analyst Swin Cash to break down the night’s news and highlights.     (ON PATRIOTS QUARTERBACK TOM BRADY):

    Fouts: Tom Brady has to be protected to be effective. He’s protected better than anybody, not only by his offensive line, but sometimes, by those guys in the striped shirts.

    Beuerlein: If you’re the Baltimore Ravens, you have to get Tom Brady’s uniform dirty. If you don’t get him on the ground, if you don’t get him beat up and thinking about the pass rush, moving around the pocket and get him off his spot, you do not have a chance. If he has a clean uniform at the end of the game, that is not a good sign for (the Ravens).

     

    (ON 49ERS QUARTERBACK COLIN KAEPERNICK):

    Simms: He may be the most dynamic quarterback in the NFL. His arm is not good, it’s special. If you watch the San Francisco 49ers ever since he became quarterback, you see these throws every single week. It’s not only the power. It’s the accuracy. That’s what has really startled me. He can throw it hard on a line, but his touch passes down the field have been spectacular… Forget the running, that arm alone is enough to make you a franchise quarterback.

    Gannon: How about the decision Jim Harbaugh made several weeks ago when he decided to replace Alex Smith for Colin Kaepernick? I just think that the guy has really played well. He has elevated his game. He’s added the big-play threat to this offense, something they didn’t have so much in the passing game with Alex Smith.

  • PROFESSIONAL BULL RIDERS RETURNS TO CBS SPORTS NETWORK WITH CHICAGO INVITATIONAL
    January 10, 2013

    Professional Bull Riders (PBR) returns to CBS Sports Network on Saturday, Jan. 12 (10:00 PM, ET) and Sunday, Jan. 13 (8:00 PM, ET) with the Chicago Invitational at Allstate Arena in Chicago, Ill. Brandon Bates, PBR Ring of Honor member J.W. Hart and Bullfighter Shorty Gorham call the action on Saturday, while Clint Adkins, Hart and reporter Leah Garcia announce on Sunday.

    2011 Chicago Invitational winner Robson Palermo, who also won last week’s Monster Energy Invitational in New York, has earned the chance to get a “Bonus Bull” following Saturday’s first round. If he reaches eight seconds, he will receive an additional $3,000.

    An encore of the Chicago Invitational airs on Sunday, Jan. 13 (11:00 PM-1:00 AM, ET).     (ON NEW KANSAS CITY CHIEFS’ COACH ANDY REID):
    Beuerlein: He took that Kansas City job because he felt it was the best opportunity for him. He came out and said this morning that finding the next Len Dawson is going to be his first priority. Now we all know the quarterback situation there is a mess. There are a lot of other problems internally in that organization as well. But Andy Reid won over 10 games eight times in his 14 years in Philadelphia. He’ll find a way to get that program winning again pretty quickly.
    Simms: There are other jobs I would have taken over the Kansas City Chiefs – good luck finding that quarterback. But I’ll say this, second time around, you learn from your mistakes. We’ve seen second-time-around coaches have great success.
     
    (ON REX RYAN):
    Gannon: Once he gets back from vacation, I think Rex Ryan is the right guy (for the Jets). But he has to get his house in order and I really think it starts with making some changes to the offensive staff. I’d be very surprised if Tony Sparano sticks around. I’d be very surprised if Matt Cavanaugh, the quarterback coach, sticks around. They have to get that situation addressed. And I think we could see a change at quarterback as well.
     
    (ON NEW BUFFALO BILLS’ COACH DOUG MARRONE):
    Simms: He has coached under Sean Payton and Bill Parcells. He’s been in the NFL. They say he’s ready for the job. I know 25-25 (at Syracuse) does not sound like a great record, but that program was completely in the gutter when he went up there. He did a wonderful job.
    Gannon: That was a mess when you took the job at Syracuse. They had won 10 games the previous four years with Greg Robinson. He was a miracle-worker up in Syracuse. He won there and I think he’ll put together a good staff in Buffalo. I think he can win there with the talent that they have.

  • NBA D-League Debuts on CBS Sports Network

    NBA DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE DEBUTS ON CBS SPORTS NETWORK WITH 2013 NBA D-LEAGUE SHOWCASE

    CBS Sports Network debuts its first season of NBA Development League coverage this week with two games from the NBA D-League Showcase. Action tips-off tonight, Monday, Jan. 7 as the Springfield Armor face the Reno Bighorns (10:00 PM, ET). On Tuesday, Jan. 8, the Los Angeles D-Fenders meet the Idaho Stampede (10:00 PM, ET). Jason Knapp and Alaa Abdelnaby announce the games from Reno Event Center in Reno, Nev.

    Additionally, CBS Sports Network will provide exclusive coverage of the NBA D-League 3-Point Shootout and the NBA D-League Slam Dunk Contest from the 2013 NBA D-League Showcase on Thursday, Jan. 10 (7:00 PM, ET).

    Throughout the season, CBS Sports Network will air 10 regular season contests, as well as playoff games and exclusive coverage of the NBA D-League Finals.

Action from the event continues on Sunday, Jan. 6 (8:00-10:00 PM, ET) with Round 3 and the Built Ford Tough Championship Round.

    College Basketball Action Continues on Sunday with Las Vegas Classic

    CBS Sports Network features a college basketball doubleheader on Saturday, Dec. 22 beginning at 12:00 NOON, ET as Murray State visits Dayton. Tom McCarthy and Dan Bonner call the action from University of Dayton Arena in Dayton, Ohio.

    Florida State at Charlotte (2:00 PM, ET) follows from Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, N.C. Dave Ryan and Pete Gillen handle the call.

    Saturday’s studio coverage includes INSIDE COLLEGE BASKETBALL (4:00 and 8:00 PM, ET), the Network’s pre-game, halftime and post-game studio show. Adam Zucker hosts, along with analysts Alaa Abdelnaby, Wally Szczerbiak and insider Jon Rothstein.

    Following are excerpts from the show.

    (ON JOE FLACCO):
    Simms: One thing I’ve always taken for granted with him is that if they’re open, he’s going to throw that football in there. And the last couple of weeks we’ve seen inconsistent throwing. You can’t have that from him because they built that offense for down-field throwing. He’s missing throws that I usually don’t see him miss… They knew their defense wasn’t going to be the same. They were trying to change their football team so they tried to open it up more for the passing game. What we’ve seen, to me, the receivers can’t deliver every week. That’s the biggest thing.

    Beuerlein: I think with everything going on right now, Cam Cameron being fired today, I just think there’s a lot of uncertainty and doubt in his mind now about how he’s going to finish this season.

    (ON KEN WHISENHUNT AND THE ARIZONA CARDINALS):
    Marino: I don’t like firing guys, but I would say gone.

    Gannon: I think it’s just a matter of time before we see defensive coordinator Ray Horton taking care of that football team. You look at the quarterback situation, it’s awful. How can you win games? Kevin Kolb hasn’t played much of the year. Of course he’s been hurt. But even when he did play, he wasn’t very good. It’s a mess right now.
    Simms: When you take a chance, if you go out and get a free agent quarterback and pay him a lot of money, you’re basically saying, I’m tying myself to this quarterback and we’re either going to get it done or leave. So I think that’s the biggest reason why he’s in a lot of trouble with this team.

    Beurlein: Do you remember this team was 4-0? It’s hard to lose nine games in a row in this league. I don’t care what the situation is. That in-and-of-itself is reason enough to consider doing what they have to do (with Whisenhunt).

    (ON SEAN PAYTON):
    Marino: Drew Brees is a guy who has been pressing a lot lately. Because his defense is playing so bad, he feels like he has to put up 40 points-per-game. He’s been pressing.

    Gannon: I know Pete Carmichael has come in and done a nice job. But if there was one thing Sean Payton could do, he could settle down Drew Brees. He knew what he did well. He knew the areas where he had some weaknesses. That’s where they really miss Sean Payton.
