Following are excerpts from the show.
(ON CHICAGO BEARS QUARTERBACK JAY CUTLER):
Phil Simms: Mark Trestman has put $70-80 million right in his pocket because he’s cleaned him up. When I watched the game yesterday, for two games in a row, I was just so impressed. He’s on balance. He’s following through on his throws. No flicks. He’s not taking chances… He’s moving at the right time. You look at the supporting cast he has. I know it’s two games, but I am sold already.
Rich Gannon: I think you’re seeing a different Jay Cutler this year. I like his confidence. I like the fact that his team seems to have confidence in him. And you get that type of confidence when you win in dramatic fashion, which is what they’ve done the last two weeks – on the last play of the game against Cincinnati and on the last play of the game against Minnesota, two playoff teams from a year ago.
(ON BALTIMORE RAVENS QUARTERBACK JOE FLACCO):
Steve Beuerlein: He is the backbone of that team. They lost a lot of players on defense. He proved himself over the last few years to all of us. I think he is the guy that is going to find a way to keep that team relevant throughout the struggles they’re going to have as the year goes along. They’re going to be in the middle of it at the end of the year because of Joe Flacco.
(ON CAROLINA PANTHERS QUARTERBACK CAM NEWTON):
Simms: I didn’t see him missing open receivers. I didn’t see him not finding the open guy down the field. I thought he did as much as he could possibly do with what was given to him. Let’s look at the Carolina Panthers. They determine what kind of team they want to be. A lot of these teams around the NFL, they are building everything for the quarterback. The Carolina Panthers are not doing that. Look at their wide receiving corps. Look at the draft last year, what they did: offensive line and defensive line. You didn’t see them drafting a lot of skill guys to make Cam Newton more explosive… They have to design more for him. And they have to help him out with some players around him.
Gannon: When you evaluate a football team, you evaluate players, coaches and scheme. Collectively, it hasn’t been good enough in Carolina, not just this season, but going back the last two seasons – back-to-back 6-10 seasons. They’re running out of time in Carolina.
(ON ATLANTA FALCONS QUARTERBACK MATT RYAN):
Simms: Underrated. People forget about the Atlanta Falcons and what he did last year. He showed his toughness. He led that team. The man can throw it under pressure… But he gets it down the field, something I did worry about him a little bit coming out of Boston College. But his arm strength keeps getting better and better and he is absolutely the leader of that team.
